Elijah Sutton Grider is the oldest son and second child of John W and Mary "Polly" (McKinney) Grider. He joined Company B, 12th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (Union) on 12 October 1861, participated in the Battle of Mill Springs, KY (January 1862), and died just outside of Corinth, MS on 25 May 1862 during the Union siege of Confederate forces there. Elijah was initially buried four miles northeast of Corinth, MS in a cow lot under an apple tree located 50 yards east of TJ Shope's house. In 1867, he was disinterred and reinterred in the newly-established Corinth National Cemetery.

For 154 years, Elijah would be 'lost' due an Army clerical error and his grave would be marked with "E C Rider" (mistranscription of a "C" for the "G"). In 2021, the Pulaski County KY Historical Society (Terry Collett, in particular) and the VA staff responsible for the Corinth National Cemetery (Calvin Jackson, in particular) made the determination of the mistake and made the correction. Our family thanks the VA, the PCHS, Calvin and especially Terry.
