John W Grider is the son of Elijah and Sarah "Sary" (Davis) Grider. He married Mary "Polly" McKinney on 22 February 1838. Private John W Grider died as a soldier in Company C of the 1st Kentucky Veterans Cavalry (Union) from typhoid fever/pneumonia at his home near Somerset, Pulaski County, KY on 29 January 1865. During the Civil War (Siege of Knoxville, Pursuit of Longstreet, Stoneman's Raid for Andersonville), he served with Company L, 1st Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry (Union).
