Note: Emma's birthdate, some 16 years earlier than the gravestone indicates (1898), may seem in error. But she twice moved her birthdate to more closely match her husband's. (It should be noted that her father did the same when he married his second wife.) Though she moved on from her first two marriages, she kept in touch with some of her Linton family members. She is listed in a distribution of her uncle John G. Linton's estate in 1944 as Mrs. Clyde E. Walters of Mount Levi, Arkansas.

Emma Isabella Linton was the daughter of William and Emma Linton. Her father had emigrated as a young child from Scotland, first to Canada, then to Kansas where he grew up and married Emma Jane Wyant. Very soon after, all the family moved to Springfield OR, where Emma was born in 1882. Her parents moved to Chico, CA for a few years, then to Adin, Modoc Co, in remote northeastern CA. With her parents' marriage failing and her siblings scattered as wards of the court, Emma, then about 15-16 years old, married 30 year old Eddy L Sheldon. They soon had a son, Edward Dewey (who later preferred the name Robert or Bob). Sometime between 1910 and 1917, Emma left this marriage. Her son Bob Sheldon registered for the draft in 1917 in Adin, listing his contact as "Belle Sheldon in Palo Alto CA." Another young man who registered in Adin at this time was Fred L. McCament. Following the end of WWI, the 1920 Census for Agua Caliente AZ listed "Fred and Belle McCament." There is a marriage recorded for Fred McCament and Emma I Sheldon in Tombstone, Cochise Co AZ 11/1/1921. Emma gave her birthdate at that time as 1886. (Fred was born in 1889) This marriage ended abruptly--both had remarried by about 1924. Fred married May Elizabeth and moved to New Mexico. Emma married Clyde E Walters--it is not clear what last name she used at that time, but it appears from the 1930 Census record that she claimed this was her first marriage and that she was born in 1898, only two years older than Clyde. Whether he ever found out that she had been married twice before, had one child (deceased) and that she was born in 1882, it is not known. We can only note that when she died, he listed her birthdate on her tombstone as 1898. At some point between 1930 and 1940, they moved to Piney, Johnson Co. Arkansas, near Hagarville. They lived in the same area for the rest of their lives.
