William Douglas Linton was born 16 Sep 1859 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, the son of William Linton and mary Elizabeth Gordon. William married 17 May 1881 in Westmoreland, Pottawatomie, Kansas to Emma Jane Wyant and the newlyweds traveled to Oregon with his parents in a wagon train, settling first in Springfield, Lane County.

The couple then settled in Butte County and then Lassen County in California. William and Emma were the parents of 6 children:

Erma Isabelle "Belle" Linton (1882-1948)
William Grover Linton (1884-1887)
Charles Harry Linton (1887-1993)
Jessie Elizabeth Linton (1889-1976)
Hallie May Linton (1891-1981)
Leland Stanford Linton (1893-1979)
