Jean was the daughter of Will and Lizzie Linton, born on their ranch in Beegum CA (on Hwy 36). She grew up with her brothers and sisters, helping with the cooking and ranch chores. At a young age, she met Clarence Griswold and they became inseparable. They were determined to marry as soon as she graduated from high school--which she bargained with her mother to extend the school at Beegum to include that schooling. They married in 1938 and four children soon followed. Clarence and his brother Charley were raising and herding Angora goats and she was an important partner in the operation. But when the market for mohair declined with the introduction of synthetic fabrics, Clarence and Jean had to find a new direction. He became a predator control employee for both the state and federal government and Jean cared for the children, gardens and various home livestock. Living and working in Siskiyou County, they finally were able to buy some land and proceeded to build their own house. When Clarence retired they began a new phase of their lives--sold everything and moved to Alaska where they hunted, fished and worked various jobs for several years. Wherever they lived, they made many friends and Alaska was no exception. They bought, repaired and then sold several homes before finally choosing to move "outside" to a warmer and less demanding location in Oregon. Jean's health had become a problem, but they continued to enjoy years of farming, travelling and making new friends. But at last Jean could no longer keep the health problems at bay and she passed in June 2002.
