Charity Elizabeth Stevens Whitener was the daughter of Hosea and Catherine Redmond Stevens. She was 75 years 1 month and 21 days of age when she departed this life on July 19, 1949. She was married March 29, 1899 to James Lafayette Whitener, son of Pinckney Graham Whitener and Mary Jane Clifton Whitener. Their 50th wedding anniversary was celebrated on the day she became bedfast.
To this union, five children were born, one of which died in infancy.
She was survived by a loving husband and four children, Mrs. Minnie Wray (Hiram Benjamin Wray) of Fredericktown, MO.; Nola Mae Whitener (single), James 'Earl' Whitener (married Grace Wells Jones), and Carl Napoleon Whitener (married Elsie Melvina Spain) all of Zion, MO.
She leaves eight grandchildren, Roy 'Linn' Wray (married Alma Walker), Benjamin 'Glenn' Wray, James 'Emmett' Wray (married Ettia Rainey), Mary Lou Wray Perry (Mrs. William Perry), Betty Sue Wray Pogue (Mrs. Donald Pogue), Carl Junior Whitener (married Bonnie Kay Berry Whitener), Peggy Ann Whitener Branch, and Jerry A Whitener.
One greatgranchild at the time of her death, Judy Perry and 4 step great-grandchildren.
She was known as Aunt Charity to a host of relatives and friends who will mourn her passing.
She was converted at a very early age and united with the Missionary Baptist Church at Mt. Pisgah, July 10, 1894, where she remained a faithful member until the time of her death.
Her many years of failing health did not take the smile from her lips. She bore her suffering with patience and looked to God for her strength.
The funeral was attended by a large crowd Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Pisgah Church with the Rev. Leonard A. Davis conducting the service. Adamson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
