William Donnell was the son of John Cobb and Nancy Ann Whitfield. He was raised by his grandfather, Bryan Whitfield. On 11 June 1833 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, William Donnell married Ann Spicer Collier. They had the following children: John Robert, Dr. Needham Bryan Cobb, Elizabeth Green, Whitfield, William Henry Harrison, Ann, Harriet, Joseph George Willis, and Maria Carolina. William and Ann's graves are very near the Confederate Monument.
