Col. John Probert Cobb was born in Wayne County, N. C. He fought in the Civil War, enlisting as a lieutenant and paroled as a colonel. Col Cobb lost his left knee in battle at Winchester, Va., on 19 Sep 1864. On 7 December 1865 Col. Cobb married Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth Whitfield. In 1883 the family moved to Florida living first near Floral City in Citrus County, and afterwards in Brooksville. While living in Hernando County, Col. Cobb was Tax Assessor and later appointed Postmaster of Brooksville. He served as assistant secretary of the State Senate in 1889 and in 1901 was appointed one of a committee to audit the State Officers at which time he moved his family to Tallahassee. Col Cobb followed that by holding a position in the office of the State Comptroller.

Col. John Cobb was the father of William D. and Lucy Whitfield Cobb; oldest son of William Donnell Cobb and Ann Spicer Collier; brother of Needham Brian, Elizabeth Green, Bryan Whitfield, William Henry Harrison, Ann Whitfield, Harriet Elizabeth, Joseph George Willis and Maria Carolina Cobb.

Col. Cobb received an A.B. from the University of North Carolina in 1854.

(Civil War: Enlisted at Goldsboro, NC on May 16, 1861. Colonel, 2nd Infantry Regiment, North Carolina, CSA; lost his left leg below the knee at Winchester, Viginia in September 1864 and was captured. Paroled at Richmond, VA in March, 1865.)

(Moved to Hernando Co, Florida on Nov. 1, 1883 and to Tallahassee in 1903, when he bought a house at 602 North Calhoun.)
