Bettie is the daughter of William Donnell Cobb and Ann Spicer Collier. In 1860 she married Nathan Bryan Whitfield, a cousin. They had the following children: Nancy Annie Collier, Sarah Eliza, Betty June "Junie," James Richard, Harriet Lucy "Hattie," and Dr. William Cobb Whitfield. Bettie and her husband, Col. Nathan Whitfield helped found Holy Innocents Parish in Lenoir County, North Carolina.
