In 1870 Paul moved with his family from Doniphan County, Kansas, to Washington County, Kansas, and in 1875 to the farm in Clay County. In 1881 he was working for a Frenchman who owned a coal mine where he weighed the coal. He resided [in Clay County] until 1897, at which time he returned to the county of his birth [Doniphan] and made his home at Wathena until he died .
For many years he was a painter and wallpaper hanger, but specialized in interior decoration. He also traveled part-time as a salesman for paint and wallpaper companies. In his later years he operated a fruit farm one-half mile west of Wathena where he raised grapes, strawberries, raspberries, apples and cherries.
Mildred Faivre-Klaumann wrote these recollections about Paul Gerardy: "He visited us (the Adrian Faivre family) once or twice when we were living at Wakefield. He was a fun-loving man and told lots of jokes. We always remembered his teaching us how to make "batchelor gravy," which was made by adding coffee to the meat juices left in the skillet after frying steak. We loved it and always remembered Uncle Paul for having taught us."
Mildred continued with this story: "One time after we moved to Clay Center , Uncle Paul sent us a puppy for Christmas. On Christmas Eve my Dad came into our home and walked all around for quite awhile before we noticed its little head sticking out of his coat pocket. There was lots of excitement in our household that Christmas over one little Fox Terrier puppy! "

Although Paul Gerardy has been gone from Clay county for a number of years, his old friends still remember his fine, manly character. His industry, honesty and cheerful disposition all combined to make him especially well like by all those who knew him. The news of his death brought sorrow to not only his relatives but to many friends and acquaintances. His brother, Will Gerardy went to St. Joseph, Mo., doing all he could to make him comfortable. He accompanied the body to Clay Center for burial.
Paul Gerardy, oldest son of Peter and Caroline Gerardy, was born May 5, 1860, at Wathena, Kan., and died at Mercy hospital, St. Joseph, Mo., September 13, 1927, aged sixty-seven years, four months and eight days.
