Mary Eliza's parents left Kentucky in 1852, lived in Missouri for three years, and pioneered in Kansas Territory in 1854. Mary lived the remainder of her adult life in Atchison and Doniphan Counties in Kansas.
On the back of her photo, her daughter, Frances Barbara, wrote, "a redhead like me." Benjamin Patton Curtis, recently home from the Civil War, asked for an introduction to the pretty redheaded school teacher in Doniphan and they were married in Doniphan on 23 July 1865, the week of her 21st birthday.
Ben and Mary Eliza were married almost 55 years. They were parents of seven girls and one boy: Anna May Tait, Mabel Maynard, Thomas and Katherine, who both died in childhood, Birde Thayer, Maude Toole, Jessie Allison, and Frances Williamson.
