OBITUARY: John Elvis Barnard died Oct. 25,1917 at his daughter's home 3 miles southwest of White Hall, Illinois. He was born June 7, 1841 near Athensville Greene Co. Illinois. His parents were William Henry and Martha Ruyle Barnard. He married Milly Jane Hopper April 14, 1864 in Greene Co., Illinois and she preceeded him in death June 14, 1890. He also was preceeded in death by two sisters, Rutha Jane(John Sidney) Hopper in 1886 and Minerva (Joseph Isaac) Greenwood in 1873 and three children, Robert W. in 1870,Charles E. in 1875 and Cavil A. in 1878. He is survived by one sister, Mary A. (William) Hopper and the following Children: Edwin S.(Laura) Barnard, Henry Evan (Annie) Barnard, Mary Lillian (Alvin) Goode, Hattie Imogene (Thomas) Lewis, Edna Elizabeth (John) Goodall, Norman Leslie Barnard, Eveline Estella (Archibald) Ridings with whom he was living and John Earnest Barnard. John was a veteran of the civil war serving in Company D of the 32nd Illinois Infantry and fought at Shiloh and The Battle of the Hatchie where he was shot through the knee and taken prisoner. After the war he was a farmer East of Roodhouse, Illinois and also operated a saw mill in Apple Creek Bottom near the town of Norwalk. He died as a result of nephritis. Burial was in Richwoods Cemetery east of Roodhouse, Illinois.
