Warren Ashby Caughran was born on January 16, 1899, in Fayetteville, Tennessee, to William Hamilton Caughran and Hasseltine Ashby Caughran. Following his service in the United States Army during World War I, Mr. Caughran moved to Ashburn, Georgia, where he was a co-founder of the Mitchell-Caughran Hardware Co. On September 3, 1925, he married Rachel Hertz Hermann, originally from Sandersville, Georgia. The couple married in Scotland, Georgia. They resided initially in Ashburn, Georgia, and later in Scotland, Georgia, where their only child, William Hermann Caughran, was born on October 8, 1928. In 1930 the Caughran family moved to Athens, Alabama, where Mr. Caughran became the local distributor for Gulf Oil Company. In 1935 they built a home at 305 North Houston Street which is now part of a historic district in Athens. Mr. Caughran resided in Athens until his death on October 3, 1966, at the age of 67.

Mr. Caughran was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Athens and also served as president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Athens. Mr. Caughran devoted much of his time to rehabilitation work for crippled children.

A funeral service was held on October 4, 1966, at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Athens, Alabama, with Rev. James Harris, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Athens, officiating.

Mr. Caughran was preceded in death by his parents, William Hamilton Caughran and Hasseltine Ashby Caughran of Fayetteville, Tennessee, and his brother, William Forrest Caughran of Tupelo, Mississippi. He was survived by his wife of 41 years, Rachel Hermann Caughran, his son and daughter-in-law, William Hermann Caughran and Barbara Ferguson Caughran, and grandson, William Hermann Caughran, Jr., all of Athens, Alabama, and his brother, Bernice Howard Caughran of Indianapolis, Indiana.
