She was the daughter of William Hamilton and Lillie (Davis) Caughran and married John Collins McFerrin - 05 Jun 1919 - Lincoln Co., Tennessee. He was her only marriage and she was married to him until the day she died. She is buried beside him.


Sarah ("Sallie") Caughran McFerrin was born on September 5, 1888, to William Hamilton Caughran and Sarah O. Davis Caughran. She attended the State Teachers College in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and for a number of years taught in the Robert E. Lee grammar school and Eighth district school, both in Fayetteville, Tennessee. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and associate conductress of the Eastern Star. She was survived by her husband, Collins McFerrin, her step-mother, Hasseltine Ashby Caughran, and several brothers.

Prominent Fayetteville Woman, In Ill Health, Slashes Throat --


FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 8 -- Mrs. Sallie Caughran McFerrin, school teacher in Lincoln County and Fayetteville for more than 20 years, committed suicide by cutting her throat with a razor, about 11:30 o'clock, Monday morning, at her home here.


Mrs. McFerrin had been in ill health for the past few years.


She was found in the bedroom closet by her step-mother, Mrs. W. H. Caughran, who had been in her room a few minutes earlier, and found her asleep in bed.


She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a Sunday School teacher, a substitute teacher for the Eighth District School, president of the American Legion Auziliary, and associate conductress of the Eastern Star.


Mrs. McFerrin had attended State Teachers College at Murfreesboro, and for a number of years had taught in the Robert E. Lee grammar school and the Eighth District school, both in Fayetteville, and at the time of her death was a substitute teacher.


Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church by th3e pastor, the Rev. W. Taylor Clarke. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.


Surviving are her husband, Collins McFerrin; her step-mother, and several brothers.
