Ann Hasseltine Ashby was born on July 3, 1860 in the Sixth Civil District of Lincoln County, Tennessee. Her parents, William Hudson Ashby and Mary Elizabeth Ramsey Ashby, were among the prominent pioneer citizens of the county. She was educated at the Oak Hill Academy, at that time one of the better known schools in Tennessee. In 1889 she married William Hamilton Caughran. Mrs. Caughran passed away on March 18, 1954, at the age of 93 and was survived by her three sons, Bernice Howard Caughran (Effie) of Indianapolis, Indiana, William Forrest Caughran (Robbie) of Tupelo, Mississippi, and Warren Ashby Caughran (Rachel) of Athens, Alabama, four grandchildren and ten step-grandchildren. Mrs. Caughran was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and, at the time of her death, was the oldest member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, Tennessee, and the last survivor of her 11 siblings.
