Mr. Caughran succeeded his father as the local distributor for Gulf Oil Company in Athens. While working he earned a Master's Degree from the George Peabody College for Teachers (now part of Vanderbilt University) in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1967 he sold the oil distributorship and shortly thereafter became a counselor for the State of Alabama Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, helping people with handicaps transition into the workforce. Mr. Caughran worked in the Auburn-Opelika area for many years and was then transferred to the Vocational Rehabilitation headquarters in Montgomery. He retired in 1990 and passed away on December 2, 1997 at the age of 69.
Mr. Caughran was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and a lay preacher. A graveside service was held on December 5, 1997, at the Athens City Cemetery in Athens, Alabama.
Mr. Caughran was preceded in death by his parents, Warren Ashby Caughran and Rachel Hermann Caughran. He was survived by his ex-wife, Barbara Ferguson Caughran, his son and daughter-in-law, William Hermann Caughran, Jr. and Mary Ellen Alcorn Caughran, and grandson, David Warren Caughran.
