Fred Lawrence Mutchler was born October 4, 1890 in the house his father and grandfather built acro9ss the drive from the original brick house on the Mutchler farm. He was the second child and the first son born to William Isaiah Mutchler and Rebecca Jane Patton.

He met his future wife at Oceola, Ohio where she was visiting relatives. On October 7, 1920, he and Iva Long Bennett were married at Fremont, Ohio. They lived in Burgoon, Ohio the rest of their lives until entering a nursing home in December, 1979. All five of their children were born while living in Burgoon.
