REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERAN
FOUNDER OF OVERMYERTOWN (OBERMEYERSTETTLE)
PIONEER OF THE OHIO FRONTIER
THE SECOND SETTLER OF WHAT BECAME PERRY COUNTY, OH
Notes by family historian and genealogist Laurence Overmire:
Peter's gravestone says he lived 82y 7m and 8d which would place his birthdate at Jan. 31, 1761, but that date is incorrect. In a Revolutionary War pension record for Daniel Parkison, Peter states that his birthdate is Feb. 5 (1761). In that document it appears Peter signed his name "Obermeier," the same spelling that appears on his tombstone. (The 1905 Overmyer History confirms that Peter was born Feb. 5, 1761.)
Obermeyer is the original German spelling of the surname, which became anglicized as Overmire, Overmier, Overmyer, Overmeyer and Overmoyer. Peter's descendants spelled the surname in several of these variations, but the German spelling on Peter's gravestone "Obermeier" indicates he was probably still speaking German as his primary language.
WARNING: There is no known photograph of John Peter Obermeier. The only photographs we have are of his son Peter Overmyer (1799-1867). Unfortunately, some are misidentifying the younger Peter's photo as his father's.
