Missie was the daughter of Elzy Kirkland and Catherine Kennedy Kirkland.
She married John Calvin Oates on March 5, 1891, in Tyler Co., Tx.
They were the parents of nine children; the youngest died as an infant.

Funeral Services Held Sunday For Mrs. Artie Oates

Funeral services for Mrs. Artie (Missie) Oates, 100, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Edwards Funeral Home. The Rev. Clint Hines, Baptist minister of Newton, and the Rev. Ernest Martin of Woodville officiated. Burial was in Camp Ground Cemetery west of Woodville.
Pallbearers were grandsons, E. Osborne Swearingen, Johnny, Elmer R. and Ben Oates, Kelton Creel, Marvin Sterling, Jr., Herman Bostick and Lloyd Hanks. All other grandsons were honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Oates, who was honored on her 100th birthday Monday, died early Saturday in her home a few miles north of Woodville.
She was a native of Shelby County and had lived in Woodville most of her life. She was a Baptist and was the widow of the late J. C. Oates.
Surviving are two sons, Bob and Elza Oates, both of Woodville; four daughters, Mrs. Emma Hanks of Beaumont, Mrs. Katherine Sterling of Warren, Mrs. Merle Creel of Sour Lake and Mrs. Hettie Jarrott of Woodville; 22 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
