He was the son of John Phillip III and Hannah Montgomery Morrison DeHaas. He built a log home near Marsh creek and ran a sawmill there. He was first married to Sarah Heckman in 1846 and they had the following children: William, Charles, Lucetta, May, Thomas, Sarah Ellen, John Phillip, Alice and Ida "Belle". Sarah Heckman DeHaas died in 1866, He then in 1870 married Susan Jane Shirk from Laurelton, Pa. Joseph and Susan had Daisy, Lydia Jane (who married Jacob Bechdel), Henrietta Chatham( Frank Grater), Mabelle, Minnie, Omar, Caroline (Hersey Robb) Lillian and Morton.
