A melancholy accident occurred on the 8th of May 1879 near Eagleville Liberty Township, Centre County when Miss Sarah Ellen DeHaas, daughter of Deacon Joseph De Haas age
22 years 10 months lest 2 days and her brother aged about 16 years were returning in a vehicle after attending services at the Brick meeting house at Eagleville. Just beyond DAVID BITNER"S barn there is a heavy downgrade. The horse ran violently down the hill kicking as he ran. Miss DeHaas was thrown from the vehicle. On ascending the hill the boy succeeded in checking the speed of the horse enough to enable him to get out without injury to himself. The horse ran home and stopped at the gate, the boy, after getting out went to look about his sister, found her speechless and unconscious. She was mortally injured. Funeral was on Wednesday the 14th. Miss Ellen was one of four sisters who by natural talents, indomitable perseverance's became efficient schoolteachers. Her death was a severe shock to her father, sister and manly brothers.

Papers from Rachel McFarland 5. Sarah Ellen DeHaas never married, born in 1856 and died May 1879. She lived at the family home near Blanchard. She was killed on Bitner's hill back of Blanchard after she and her brother John attanded church at Blanchard. Someone unhooked the harness on the horse and descending the hill, the horse broke loose from the buggy and she jumped from the buggy and was killed.
