Mr. DeHaas was aged 84 years and was a son of the late Joseph DeHaas, by his first marriage, of Liberty Township, Centre County. He located in Clearfield County when he was a young man and “grew up” with the bituminous coal and fire clay business, success attending his efforts. He was prominent in Republican politics for many years and served several terms as treasurer of Clearfield County and in the State Legislature.
The deceased was survived by one daughter, Mrs. Claire Snyder of Clearfield, his wife and an adult unmarried daughter having died in recent years. Also surviving were two sisters, Mrs. May Schnure of Washington, DC, and Miss Ida DeHaas of Lock Haven, and the following step-brother and step-sisters: Morton C. DeHaas, Miss Maybel DeHaas, Mrs. Jacob C. Bechdel of Beech Creek; Mrs. Frank Grater of Verona, and Mrs. Hersey Robb of Long Island, New York.
Mr. DeHaas was a direct descendant of Major John Philip DeHaas of Philadelphia, who for services in the Colonial and Revolutionary Wars, was given warrants for tracts of land in Bald Eagle Valley near Beech Creek, and whose son, John Philip DeHaas, also breveted a major, is buried in the Hays-Fearon Cemetery, Beech Creek. The grant of lands by the government resulted in the DeHaas fore bearers locating in the Bald Eagle Valley.
