Max Austin was born in Cardston, Alberta, Canada to Newton Francis Austin Jr. and Annie Martha Nelson. He has four siblings: Lottie, Phoebe Hazel, Thomas Francis and Russell Dewitt. In 1930, he was employed as an accountant in a hospital. He also was a writer and a journalist. Max spent some time in a sanitarium in Mexico City, Mexico as he had tuberculosis. He married Mary Tirzah Plaisted about 1945. They did not have any children. Max died in Pauma Valley, San Diego, California, USA and is buried in the Potrero Indian Cemetery.
