OBITUARY-

Retired man dead in garage

Virgil Bearden, 79 year-old retired worker, of 820 Milan Avenue, last night was found dead in a garage at the rear of his home by neighbors.

Deputy Coroner Harry Grant, who made an investigation with Deputy Sheriffs Sherman Davis and Stanley Drake, said that death was apparently due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Authorities said that Bearden left a note which reads "I'm sorry, but there isn't any use of me going on alone this way, so forgive me if it is possible. I hope this won't put anyone to too much trouble. "

Police learned Bearden had been despondent since his wife died last March.

Mrs. Melvin McGahey, who resides just north of the Bearden home, noticed a light in the victim's garage shorty before 10 o'clock last night. Since there was no light in his home, she suspected something was wrong. Looking thru the garage window, she saw Bearden's body hanging out of the front door of his car. Mrs. McGahey summoned Doris Patterson of 828 Milan avenue and then the women called William Garland of 821 Milan avenue.

Believing Bearden to be dead, they called police. The ignition of Bearden's car was turned on. Another note was found in the billfold designating a funeral director to care for his body. Bearden has a step-son residing in Wisconsin and a step-son in Zion, Ill.
