PIONEER RESIDENT DIES FROM BURNS RECEIVED SATURDAY
G. J. Gittinger, 85, died at the Yocom hospital about 6:00 a.m. Sunday morning of burns received about noon Saturday. He was aiding in the checking of a trash fire which was spreading near his home at 623 East Court.
He was on his way to a telephone when he discovered his trousers were on fire and received the burns which were to prove fatal before the fire could be put out. His daughter, Miss Mabel Gittinger, noticed her father's plight and rushed to aid him. She received a cut and severe burns on her hands while helping to beat out the flames. The clothes on the victim's body were easily burned off in several places.
The fire department was summoned and they immediately called an ambulance which took Gittinger to the hospital where he lived until Sunday morning.
A pioneer of Lucas county, he had served as sheriff, clerk and assessor and was a member of the 45th Iowa legislature. He is survived by his widow, Laura, daughter Mabel of Chariton, and a son in Harlingen, Texas. A brother, Henry W. Gittinger, former editor of The Leader, also survives.
The son, Burke, of Harlingen, Texas, formerly owned and operated a drug store in Chariton. Three grandchildren survive. They are; Caroline, in the WAVES, Leonard, New York City and Betty, Los Angeles, Calif.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Beardsley Funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Bonte Grussing. Interment followed at the Russell cemetery.
