GITTINGER
Mabel Gittinger, a former resident of Chariton, died June 8 at the Point Lookout Health Care Center in Hollister, Mo. The body has been cremated and a graveside service was held at the family plot in the Russell Cemetery June 17. The service was conducted by a family friend, the Rev. Wauneita McConnell.
Miss Gittinger was born in Lucas County, the daughter of George Jacob (better remembered as Jake) and Laura (nee Goltry) Gittinger. She was an elementary school teacher and principal the greater part of her life. She was a graduate of Drake University.
The Gittinger family were lifelong members of the Democratic Party and Mabel was a delegate to the national convention which gave Franklin Delano Roosevelt his first presidential nomination in 1932. After his election Mabel took time out from her teaching career and was appointed a member of the staff of the newly elected Democratic governor of Iowa.
She moved to Des Moines along with her father who had been elected a Representive to the House where he served one term. In 1934 Mabel was appointed director of the Des Moines office of the U.S. Customs Bureau, World War II. She then returned to Chariton and resumed her teaching career. She accepted her retirement from teaching in 1956. However she was not ready to quit working and she ran successfully for the office of Lucas County Auditor. She was the first woman and first Democrat elected to this position which she held for one term.
In 1971 Mabel moved to Branson, Mo., where her nephew and a niece whom she had helped raise had retired. She maintained her independence until 1988 when her health required her to move into the Health Care Center where she resided until her death.
Mabel was a member of the Chariton Methodist Church until she moved to Missouri where she became a member of the Branson Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, an older brother and two nieces. She is survived by a nephew and his wife, Leonard B. and Edith (nee May) Gittinger of Hollister, Mo.
