Portrait and Sketch of Peter Hill, the Republican Candidate

Peter Hill, the Republican candidate for presiding judge of the county court, was born March 8, 1832 in Franklin county, Virginia. His parents and grandparents were Virginians but were of English descent. He was raised on a farm, and at the age of 19 began learning the trade of a saddler and harness maker. Five years later, in 1856, he engaged in the general merchandise business at Allegheny Springs, Virginia in partnership with Mr. Paris Taylor.
In the spring of 1860 the political clouds looked dark, and he sold out to his partner. In 1861, when it was left to a choice between union and disunion he chose the former, and to use his own words, "I have never seen cause to regret it."

In 1867 he was married to Miss D. C. Hess of Michigan, and in November of that year came to Missouri and located in Carthage, where he engaged in the saddle and harness business. He continued in that business here for sixteen years, during which time he was recognized as one of the leading business men of the county. He sold out to C. E. Turner and moved to a farm 4 1/2 miles south of Carthage in Jackson township, where he now resides.

Mr. Hill's candidacy is very popular throughout the county and the more so where he is best known. He is a man who has been preminently successful in the management of his own affairs, and it is generally recognized by men of all parties that he will make just the kind of presiding judge of the county court which the county needs. All indications point to his election by a handsome majority.
