MRS. PETER HILL DIES
SHE WAS WIDOW OF FIRST MAYOR OF CARTHAGE
HAD BEEN SERIOUSLY ILL THE LAST THREE WEEKS - FUNERAL SERVICES TOMORROW
Mrs. Mary Emily Hill, 84, widow of Peter Hill, first mayor of Carthage, passed away at 3:30 o'clock this morning at her home, 418 Clevenger Street.
Mrs. Hill had been seriously ill the last three weeks, suffering from a complication of ailments. During the last week of her condition became critical and the end was expected at any time. She had been unconscious most of the last week.
Mrs. Hill had been a resident of Carthage about 40 years. She was born in Wilmington, Ohio November 22, 1846. She came to Missouri with her parents when she was a small child and lived in Brunswick. She lived in several states, coming here from Kentucky where she was married to Alex Chapman, who passed away many years ago in Kentucky. He is buried in Huntington, West Virginia. A son, William, who died at the age of 18 years also is buried in the cemetery at Huntington.
Mrs. Hill and the late Mrs. Samuel McReynolds were girlhood friends and attended school together in Brunswick. After Mrs. Hill came to Carthage they renewed their friendship and were fast friends until Mrs. McReynolds death a number of years ago.
On February 24, 1904, Mrs. Hill was married to Peter Hill in Carthage. He died here in 1926.
She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and took an active part in all church activities until recently, when her health failed. she also was a member of the Sunshine Society and of the local King's Daughters Circle.
Surviving are a sister, Anna Belle Morgan Corwin
a brother;
Charles Morgan of Bishop, California
and the following grandchildren;
Mrs. Theresa Jacobs of Kansas City
Mrs. Robert Huff of Los Angeles, California and
George Jacobs and Mary Jane Jacobs of Carthage
Two great grandchildren;
Jenice Jacobs of St. Louis and
Renee Patricia Huff of Los Angeles also survive
P. F. Jacobs of Carthage is a son-in-law.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church, South former pastor Rev. J. C. Saylor officiated.
The body was sent to Huntington, West Virginia for burial.
