William Riley Long Jr. was the third of 12 children born to William Riley Long and Mary Elizabeth Blankinship

(Obituary.) Mr William Riley Long was born December 13, 1858 in the state of Kentucky. He passed away January 20, 1942 at 20 minutes till 1:00 at Preston, Kansas after living a long life of 83 years,1 month and 16 days. In 1878, William and his father moved to Illinois in a covered wagon and it was while here that he married Mary Eckler. This marriage occurred in 1882 at Menard, Ill. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Lyons. Kansas in Reno County where two daughters were born and passed away in infancy. The couple was then blessed with a son, Arthur Lee Long, who was born in Lyons in 1886. After Arthur was born, they moved back to Illinois and it was while they were there that Lola May was born. This in 1889. They lived in Illinois until June 2, 1914. His wife, Mary, passed away in March 1902. On February 10, 1910, Lola May married Jesse Otstott, and William made their home his home for these many years. In 1914 they moved from Illinois to a farm northwest of Preston, Kansas and this has been their home community ever since. William belonged to the Christian church in Illinois. He was a kind patient and loving person, making many friends and having no enemies. He leaves to mourn his departure his son Arthur L. Long of Springfield ill.; his daughter Lola May Otstott of Preston Kansas; one brother Joe Long of Preston Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Naomi Beck of Preston Kansas; and Grace Raisner of Corning Calif. Also thirteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
