Joseph Richard Long was born in Grayson county Kentucky in 1873. He was the 9th out of 12 children born to William Riley Long and Mary Elizabeth Blankinship. In 1883, at the age of 10, he was taken by his parents to Illinois and in 1885 they moved to western Kansas. His future wife, Emma Retta Cox had preceded him there. She was the daughter of James Jesse Cox (Find A Grave Memorial# 6852380) and Mary Elizabeth Whitehurst, she came to Kansas with her parents in 1877. Joseph Richard Long Married Mary Elizabeth Whitehurst on March 1, 1896. The wedding ceremony was in charge of Rev. W. F. Raisner, a Baptist minister, and a brother-in-law of Joseph Long. They started their married life in a sod house on the plains. After six years of life in the sod house, Joseph built a large house on the farm In 1916, they retired from the farm and moved into Preston, Kansas, where in 1921 they built the modern home on the east edge of town. Joseph and Emma had two children; their son, Chester Arthur (Find A Grave Memorial# 10363094), and a daughter, Mildred Viola Long (Find A Grave Memorial# 28064191). Joseph died on April 23, 1960 in Pratt, Kansas at the age of 87.
