Isaac Hermann was born in the Alsace region of France on May 7, 1838 to Emanuel Hermann and Sarah Helene Bernhelm Hermann. In 1859 he emigrated to the United States, settling first in Davisboro, Georgia, and then in Sandersville, Georgia. In 1861 he joined the Washington Rifles which rendezvoused with the First Georgia Regiment. Mr. Hermann saw action in Virginia under Generals Henry R. Jackson and T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Later as a bugler for the Sam Robinson Artillery Company he served in the Mississippi and Alabama campaigns commanded by Gen. W.H.T. Walker. After recuperating from an illness in the hospital, the doctor in charge of the hospital requested that Mr. Hermann be assigned to assist him in keeping records and purchasing provisions. Later Mr. Hermann joined a cavalry unit and went on several undercover missions behind enemy lines.

Following the war Mr. Hermann returned to Sandersville and married Rachel Hertz. The couple had 11 children. After his wife's death in 1896, Mr. Hermann married Marguerite Hermann, his brother Samuel's widow, in 1905. Mr. Hermann, a merchant, served on the board of education and was the county tax receiver for several terms. At the urging of friends, Mr. Hermann wrote "Memoirs of a Confederate Veteran 1861-1865" which was published in 1911. The book was reprinted in 1974 by CSA Printing and Bindery, Inc. Mr. Hermann passed away on April 12, 1917 a few weeks before his 79th birthday.
