Mary Adeline "Susie" Schlachter was born on April 15, 1900 on a farm just outside Junction City, Boyle Co., Kentucky. Her family's farm is now the Boyle
County Fish and Game Club. Susie was the daughter of Joseph Lee "Joe" Schlachter (1876-1951) and Mary Davidson (1878-1935).

Her father, Joe, was born in the Grand Duchey of Baden. Baden merged with Wirttemberg in 1952 and is now a German state. He came to America with his parents, Herman Schlachter (1856-1928) and Mary V. Keller (1852-1940), arriving in New York City on June 7, 1890.

Joe, only 13 at the time, worked on the ship to pay for his passage. His father (34) probably did so as well. Both of Joe's parents were born in Germany and died in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. They are buried in the St. Michael Cemetery in Louisville.

Susie's mother, Mary, was born in Bullitt Co., KY, near Mt. Washington. She was the daughter of William M. Davidson (1854-1920) and Catherine M. "Kate" Thomas (1855-1913). William was born in Harrison Co., Indiana, Kate in Kentucky. Both died in Louisville, KY and are buried in the Mt. Washington Cemetery in Bullitt County.

In 1920, Susie married Jesse James "Jess" Cannon (1898-1954). Susie was 20, Jess 22. According to one of her daughters (Mary Frances Cannon) "Susie was an attractive young lady who stood 5'7 and had thick cold black hair that at times was waist length".

Susie's daughter went on to describe her as a loving wife and mother who was a hard worker on the family farm doing house chores and working in the fields. She loved quilting and belonged to a church quilting group. She and her husband, Jess , were faithful church members.

Jess was born on a farm outside of Liberty, Casey Co., KY, the son of James Harrison Cannon (1854-1928) and Polly Anne Young (1868-1945). His father, James, was born in Tennessee, his mother, Polly, in Lincoln Co., KY.

Susie and Jess were married for 34 years and had eight known children. In order of their birth they were James Samuel Cannon (1921-1921), Mary Frances Cannon (1924-),
Margie Mae Cannon (1927-), Ernest Lee Cannon (1930-1988), Sherman Riley Cannon (1932-1969), Earlene Faye Cannon (1935-), Joseph Henry "Joe" Cannon (1937-1979) and William Ray "Bill" Cannon (1941-1985).

Jess died from lung cancer on Feb. 7, 1954 in Danville, KY at the age of 56. He is buried in the Junction City Cemetery in Boyle Co., KY.

Several years after Jesse's death Susie married Dave Thompson, also a widower. Susie's daughter, Frances, described Dave as "a good-natured man who was very good to her mother". When Dave died in 1989 he was buried next to his first wife, Bertha Lawhorn (1902-1965), in the Versailles Cemetery located in Versailles, Woodford Co., KY.

Susie died on Feb. 7, 1998 in Danville, KY at the age of 97. She is buried next to her first husband, Jess, in the Junction City Cemetery in Boyle Co., KY. They share the same marker. All five of their sons are also buried in the this cemetery.
