James Samuel Cannon was born in Junction City, Boyle Co., KY on Apr. 22, 1921. He was the first born child of Jesse James "Jess" Cannon (1898-1954) and Mary Adeline "Susie" Schlachter (1900-1998). They were married on May 1, 1920.

His father, Jesse, was born in Liberty, Casey Co., KY. He was the son of James Harrison "Jim" Cannon (1854-1928) and Polly Ann Young (1868-1946). Jim was born in Tennessee and died in Lexington (hospital), Fayette Co., KY. Jess' mother, Polly, was born in Lincoln Co., KY and died in Stamping Ground, Scott Co., KY.

James mother, Mary, was born in Junction City, Boyle Co., KY. She was the daughter of Joseph Lee "Joe" Schlachter (1876-1951) and Myra "Mary" Davidson (1878-1935). Joe was born in the Grand Duchy of Baden (today a German state) and had immigrated to America in 1890 with his parents.

According to his death certificate James died on July 7, 1921 from "summer diarrhea", often called "summer complaint" (infant bowel disease). He was only nine weeks old. He is buried in the Junction City Cemetery in Junction City, Boyle Co., KY.
