A 55 year old Galena woman died of asphyxiation early Saturday morning when a fire swept though her five room frame house.

The victim was identified as Mrs. Edna Beulah Shrock, 55. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire by Cherokee County Coroner Dr. Dale Alquist.

Mrs. Shrock's body was found on a bed in the bedroom of the home. Firemen, who received the alarm at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning recovered her body about 10 minutes after arriving at the scene. Coroner Alquist said Mrs. Shrock was overcome by smoke and died of asphyxtation.

Three fire trucks and 22 firemen were employed in fighting the blaze which gutted the inside of the home. Cause of the blaze was never determined.

Born June 25, 1909 at Galena, she had lived in Galena all her life, She had been employed at the Princetan furniture company in Galena and was a clerk at the Mays Drug Store, 1600 Main Street Joplin, MO.

Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Maude Pigg, two daughters Mrs. Sammie Neil Watson, and Mrs. Sandra Young. Two brothers Rev. John Pigg, Clifford Pigg, Five sisters, Mrs. Ruby Booe, Mrs. Erma Nausley, Mrs. Alma Mae Moody, Mrs. Betty Karr, and Mrs Dorothy Shaw and three grandchildren.

A closed casket funeral was conducted on Monday afternoon at 2pm at the sixth street Baptist church with the Rev. Dow Booe and Rev. Cecil Smith Officiating.
