Mrs. Mary L. Goltry, the fourth child of David S. and Mary Ann Wright, was born in Lucas county, Iowa, September 22, 1860, and departed this life at her home northeast of Russell, July 3, 1925.
On December 3, 1884, she was united in marriage to Frank Goltry, who preceded her in death October 6, 1901. To this union were born four children: W.D., Leonard C., Carl T. Goltry and Mrs. Ethel Thompson, all of Russell, Iowa. There are six grandchildren. Besides four sisters and two brothers who reached maturity; Mrs. Laura Ann Willey (deceased)of Sheridan, Wyoming; Mrs. Alverette T. Baxter, Chariton, Iowa; Mrs. Sarah Amanda Allen and Mrs. Winifred Brundage, Sheridan, Wyoming; and F.H. and J.M. Wright of Russell, Iowa, she had a sister Maggie and a brother Eddie who died in infancy.
She was a member of the Methodist church of Russell, Iowa. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxilliary of the American Legion, joining at the time of its organization. A host of other friends and relatives mourn her death which came rather suddenly and unexpectedly after being confined to her bed only a few days, though her health has been failing for several months past.
She has spent her entire life in this community where she has earned a place in the hearts of her neighbors, who all testify to her ever ready helping hand. If one was sick or in trouble, she was the first on hand and the last to think of self. Always were others uppermost in her mind, for her joys were the joys of others, as were her cares. She is needed now in this hour of loss to comfort and guide, no one can seem to realize that "Mate" is gone.
Nothing seems to express better the appreciation of her virtues, the feeling of great loss, and the prayer of those who loved this wonderful mother, sister and friend, than do these lines by Whittier:
The blessing of her quiet life
Fell on us like the dew,
And good thoughts, where her footsteps pressed,
Like fairy blossoms grew,
Sweet promptings unto kindest deeds
Were in her very look.
We read her face, as one who reads
A true and holy book.
There seems a shadow on the day,
Her smile no longer cheers:
A dimness on the stars of night,
Like eyes that look through tears.
Fold her, O Father, in thine arms,
And let her henceforth be
A messenger of love between
Our human hearts and Thee.
Funeral services were held in the Russell Methodist church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, in charge of the pastor Rev. James Walls, assisted by Rev. M.T. Butterfield of Indianola. Rev. C.C. Goltry of Thornburg, Iowa, Mr. Goltry's youngest brother, was present with the family.
