She worked at Carr's (Hall's) Department Store in downtown Oswego after her husband passed away to support their children. She later managed the snack bar at Parkside Bowling Alley in Montgomery where she also practiced her love of the game as a league member.
Helen was one of the original members of St. Anne Church in Oswego, IL where she remained actively involved until her illness. She started the longstanding tradition for her family of going to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, she enjoyed teaching the CCD classes and for many years was very generous with her time and talent in support of the Church. Helen was devoted to her children and their families, supporting their interests even when it took her out of her comfort zone but opened her up to many new and unusual experiences, keeping her young of heart even as her body aged.
She grew up in the urban environment of Aurora but embraced the land when she and her growing family moved to a small farm outside of Oswego. Helen enjoyed the role of farm wife and mother, she became a skilled baker, a cook who could provide delicious holiday feasts for legions, she could can and freeze enough produce harvested from her husband's garden to keep her large family well fed throughout the year. Her family ate off of the land, and all grew to have a love for the natural beauty and abundance of the farm overlooking the Fox River.
She loved flowering plants and was always looking for new ones to enhance the beauty of her garden and fostered her old favorites with care. The abundant songbirds brought her comfort in her later years as her activities became more limited.
Her hobbies included reading Agatha Christie mysteries, crocheting, sewing, traveling, crossword puzzles and enjoying the music of Dean Martin and Mario Lanza.
Helen was the youngest in a family of 14 and she was the last surviving member. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two children, Alan R. Wilson in 1967 and Patricia Adams in 2006; two sons-in-law, Justin DeLoss (Red) Larsen and Robert Adams; one grandchild, Dale Larsen; one great-grand-child, Joshua N; and her siblings, Helen Sabo, Louis Sabo III, Julia and Earl Brownell, David and Maitie Sabo, Helen Sabo, Margaret and William Burch, Arthur Sabo, Catherine Sabo, Theresa and Thomas Stelin, Anthony Sabo, Joseph and Katherine Sabo, William and Beth Sabo, Julius and Emily Sabo.
