William Gale Burgess born July 9, 1894, was the eldest son of Tom W. and Theo (Hendrick) Burgess. Gale moved to KS from Luana, IA with his parents, two brothers and two sisters in 1908. He and his brother, Gage, rode in the stock car as the animals had to be fed and watered regularly on the trip. Gale claimed exemption from the draft during World War I because "father cannot run the farm without me." After the death of his parents he remained on the family farm twelve miles north of Ingalls. In 1946 he joined a lonely hearts club and corresponded with Ruby Garner of North Carolina - they were married October 20, 1946. Ruby did not like being a western Kansas farm wife and convinced Gale that they should sell everything and move back to North Carolina. They left Kansas in December 1947 and there was little communication from them.
