Frederick was left an orphan at an early age & reared by strangers. When about 25 he moved from Cabarrus County, North Carolina to Indiana, lived there about 2 years before moving to Illinois. He removed 3 years later to Gasconade County & located on Crider's Creek.
His son, Joseph, was married on 22 Feb. 1849 to Manerva Jane Shockley, who passed in 1865 leaving 7 children. Manerva died three days after giving birth to a daughter, Manerva Jane Jr.. Joseph's second marriage was to Hannah Manerva Branson. Hannah was first married to Thomas Jefferson Shockley Jr., the brother of his first wife, Manerva Jane. To this union was born a daughter, Cassa Jane. His third and final marriage was to Olivia Catherine Anderson (nee Branson), the sister of Hannah.
Since 1849, Joseph has lived on his present farm & is now the owner of 400 acres of good land. In 1861 he joined Company A MO State Militia & served 6 months as sergeant. About 8 years prior & during the Civil War he served as justice of the peace. He has always been an industrious & upright citizen, plus an earnest advocate for the cause of education.
