Neel community

Gladys McCormick Christian, 89 years of age, passed away from this life and went to be with Lord on Sunday, May 18, 2008. She died at her residence.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Walden Chapel Baptist Church with Reverends Don Crumpton, Fred Green and Stanley Linderman officiating. Visitation will be this evening from 6 to 9 at Peck Funeral Home with burial in the Johnson Chapel cemetery.
Mrs. Christian was born Sept. 11, 1918, in rural Southeastern Lawrence County. She was the eldest child of Claude Edward McCormick and Elsie Moore McCormick. In 1937, her family bought a farm at Neel. Several years later, her father died and much of the farm work became her responsibility. Later, as a young adult, she was employed at the Alabama Hosiery Mill. On Oct. 23, 1948, she married William Grady Christian in Iuka, Miss. They made their home in the Liberty Community for several years until they returned to her old home place at Neel, where she resided until her death.
As a small child, she walked over a mile to the old Johnson Chapel School but wasn't able to finish. Esteeming education, she returned to school when she was in her 40s and received her diploma. She became a substitute teacher at the old Neel School.
Mrs. Christian was the oldest surviving member of the Walden Chapel Baptist Church, just as her husband was at the time of his death. She was a faithful member for nearly 60 years, teaching youth classes, working in Vacation Bible School and visiting the sick. A quiet, unassuming Southern lady, she was a homemaker most of her married life, devoting her life to her family, always putting them ahead of herself. Although she never traveled far and saw many of the world's sights, she was wise and conscientious. Mrs. Christian was the heartbeat of her home, adored by her husband, loved and respected by her children and admired by her grandchildren. She was known for her cooking skills, especially her desserts. She also preserved large amounts of vegetables from her garden.
Preceding her in death was her husband of over 55 years, William Grady Christian; sister, Estelle Roberts, and her husband, Allie; brother, W. Truitt McCormick; and a nephew, John Wayne Franklin.
Survivors include one son, David Christian; one daughter, Joyce Christian Walker, and her husband, Buddy, of Neel; granddaughters, Kelly Walker Holladay of Neel and Kim Walker Young and her husband, Michael, of Mount Olive; greatgrandsons, Christian Holladay and Carson Holladay of Neel and Walker Young and Peyton Young of Mount Olive; one sister, Hazel Parker of Hartselle; sister-in-law, Betty McCormick of Hartselle; and a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends
Pallbearers will be Delane McCormick, Ronald "Bubba" McCormick, Trenton Reynolds, Pat Lane, Michael Young and Herchel Clemons.
Honorary pallbearers will be Clinton Simmons, J.W. Franklin and Windle Holbert.
Truly the world may little note her passing, as they did not know her, but her family and friends will never forget her worth. "She looketh well to the ways of her household," Proverbs 31:27, "for her price is far above rubies," Proverbs 31:10.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dinesh Gandhi, Ann, Sandra and the Hartselle Medical Center staff for the care they gave to both their mother and father for over 25 years. We would also like to thank Gail, her Alacare nurse.
