Son of George Freeman and Sarah Benge. Riley Freeman arrived in Wabash Co. Indiana with his father and other members of his family in 1846 from Carroll Co. Indiana, where the family had lived since the 1830s. A lay preacher or 'exhorter' from his youth, he was an early member of the congregation of the Paw Paw (Half Acre) Christian Church west of Urbana, where he served as a deacon for 25 years. Riley was also a 'circuit rider' in his younger days, ministering to congregations without the services of a regular preacher. He married Martha A. Amber, the daughter of William Amber and Sarah Groves, on Apr. 16, 1846 in Wabash Co. Indiana. Riley died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Miller, in the city of Wabash. His county death record gives a birth date of May 25, 1821.
