Son of George Freeman and Sarah Benge, William was most likely born in old Clay Co. (present day Laurel Co.) Kentucky. He first arrived in Indiana in the 1830s, when the Freeman family settled in Carroll Co., remaining there for a number of years after the family re-settled to Wabash Co. Indiana in the 1840s. During the Civil War, William served in CO. B, 128th Indiana Infantry. He enlisted in the unit at Logansport (Cass Co.) Indiana on November 23, 1863 and was discharged at Greensboro, North Carolina on July 10, 1865. During his service he was held as a POW at Andersonville, where he received an injury to his left arm. His marriage was to Martha Wright in Carroll Co. Indiana on December 25, 1845 (she is believed to be deceased after 1860).
