Easton youth met death yesterday at Herington, Ks., July 30, 1921.
Lester Abel, 18 years old, walking home from Pueblo, Co., fell asleep on railroad tracks.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Abel of Easton, was killed two miles east of Herington about 4 o'clock yesterday morning when he was struck by a Rock Island engine while he was asleep on the track. The boy never knew what struck him. His body was thrown clear off the track. The neck, left arm and leg were broken.
Young Abel was accompanied by Nelson Townsend, also of Easton. The two left about two weeks ago.
Abel and Townsend had been to Pueblo for work and were walking home. Both fell asleep on the track while resting.
Townsend was awakened by the rumble of the engine and the glare of the headlight. He jumped, but did not have time to awaken his companion.
The boy will be brought to Leavenworth, it is said.
