~My beautiful mother~

Alice Jane Hudson Todd "Jane", was born in Idabel, McCurtain Co., Oklahoma, in 1919.
The second child of four children born to Murphy Foster, Sr. and Lura Jane Bryant Hudson. Upon her graduation from High School and extended Secretarial Classes in Idabel, OK, where she had studied typing and shorthand, she became the secretary for Leon Todd at McCurtain Co. Welfare Dept. in Idabel. She soon married him. She was my mother and I adored her. She always said she knew as soon as she met my dad, she would marry him. He said he knew the same thing. They had a true love story you don't often find today and on 17 Sep 1938, they married in Ft. Smith, Sebastian Co., AR. It was just a private little service in the Pastor's office of the church then they drove on up through the beautiful Ozark Mountains for a honeymoon. That love story lasted until my dad passed in 1968.

They moved from Oklahoma City to Newton in 1945. At that time, Newton had become a Sawmill town. Claude Williams had wanted to put a sawmill in at Newton and he'd met up with John Louis Todd in a little town called Patroon, TX. They built and worked in a mill there. Claude asked John Todd to come to Newton to help him build the sawmill. John had worked all his adult life at a mill in Wright City, OK so he came. Newton Lumber Company was built with John Todd as Millwright. He would be Saw Filer and Planer Foreman at the sawmill until his death in 1947. John's son - Leon Todd and family, came to visit and that's how they became residents of Newton. Claude asked Leon Todd to be his Business Manager. Jane and Leon, along with their son Conley, moved to Newton. They quickly became active residents of the town. Jane Todd was a member of First Baptist Church where she played the piano for Sunday Services for about 20 years. She had many friends and loved her life here in Newton. At age 48, she suddenly lost her husband and the love of her life, Conley Leon Todd, Sr. She began working at the First National Bank where she worked many years until retiring. In 1976, she married Everett B. Perry. They were married until his death in 1985. The most loving mother, she also was a generous and influential grandmother. She was an avid Bridge player and it was truly her passion all her adult life. There was nothing she could not spell and she prevailed at crossword puzzles. She was an accomplished pianist and seamstress. She could sew anything I asked for just from my description. She was a member of the Newton Garden Club. She leaves a son and a daughter, two sisters, and a brother. She is also survived by five grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Rest and be at peace my sweet mother - how I miss you.....

Prior to their marriage, Jane and Everett made a mutual decision to be laid to rest by their original spouse whom they'd both lost at a young age and with whom they'd raised a family. This wish was honored with Jane resting beside her first husband here in Newton City Cemetery and Everett resting beside his first wife in Greenlawn Memorial Park, in Groves, Texas.
