"Joseph Oscar Mattingly of St. Mary, a well known farmer and livestock dealer, died as the result of a stroke at 1:25 A.M. Sunday, September 20, 1970, at Methodist Evangelical Hospital in Louisville. He was 74. Mr. Mattingly had been hospitalized at Mary Immaculate Hospital five days before being transferred to Louisville, where he was under treatment three weeks. A native of Marion County, he was a son of the late Martin and Jessie Greene Mattingly. Survivors include his wife, Louise Hardesty Mattingly; a son J. Nolan Mattingly, Louisville; two daughters, Mrs. Maurice Mudd and Mrs. Russell Sullivan, Louisville, and five grandchildren."

The Rev. Henry Knopp conducted the funeral at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at St. Charles Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Bosley Funeral Home, where the Rosary was recited at 8 P.M. Tuesday, was in charge of arrangements. Serving as pallbearers were Bernard Thompson, Hubert Rogers, Marion Williams, Polin Thompson, Willard Frogge and Joe O'Daniel."
