Born in Three Oaks, Michigan, to Reeves Samuel and Minnie (Sauers) Moore of Rolling Prairie, Indiana. He graduated from Rolling Prairie High School, where he played baseball, in 1918. As a teenager and young adult, he was a market hunter for ducks, which later developed into a lifelong love of hunting and fishing. He began working as a machinist at the Rumley plant in La Porte, where he would meet his wife, Meta, and walk her home from her job at the telephone exchange.

Married Meta Ann Hannemann of La Porte, Indiana, in a civil ceremony at St. Joseph, Michigan, on April 28, 1923. Unable to have biological children, together they adopted one daughter at birth:
1. Sharon Madyne Moore (b. September 4, 1934, in La Porte, Indiana, as Jane Partington)

After breaking his arm in a work accident, he was in the hospital when his daughter was born, and his doctor facilitated her adoption. Six months later, Claude and his family would leave La Porte for Waterloo, Iowa, where he was employed at John Deere. He ended his career as a supervisor, and spent his final year with John Deere in New Orleans, where he supervised the international shipment of farm equipment. After his retirement in 1966, he and his wife split time between their home in Cedar Falls, Iowa; a vacation home in Avon Park, Florida; and their daughter's home in La Porte.

He died at the hospital in La Porte of COPD on August 6, 1989. He was buried next to his wife at Union Mills on August 9, 1989.
