The son of , Thomas Jefferson Scalf & Martha Hammonds. He married , Mary Florence York , on November 4 , 1889 and together they had 7 children. James was a carpenter by trade and built many homes within the vacinities of Williamsburg , KY & Jellico , TN. He was also a collector of wild herbs such as ginseng and would oftenly sell them to individuals and companies. James died in Jellico from a severe case of Dysentery which he contracted from eating spoiled fruit. After his death , his wife and children would later settle in Morley , TN.
