The son of , Thomas Jefferson Scalf & Martha Hammonds. He was a brilliant and well-educated man who was an outstanding entrenpeneur. A travelling merry-go-round and A mobile photograph studio were just a few of his many enterprises. Dawrity was known by several names including : D.W. , Dow White , Daw & Doc. He was the founder & owner of the highly successful , Scalf Medicine Company & producer of the famous " Scalf Indian River Tonic " which was developed by his brother , John Silas Scalf & named after a small river that flows through La Follette , TN. This tonic was a vitamin & iron supplement & sold extremely well until the 1960's. Dawrity had also developed a cure for " Pellagra " , a vitamin deficiency disease caused by a dietary lack of niacin & protein. For an extensive period of time he had the only known cure & hospitals bought his medicine. Sadly however , he was not appropriately credited for that cure. He was also one of the first men to develop a remedy for Diarrhea & Dysentery. By the 1960's , the increased usage of vitamin pills sounded the demise of his tonic & production was halted by the 1970's. Dawrity had married twice during his life. His 1st wife was , Sarah Disney , to whom he was married to the longest & they had three children together. After Sarah's death , he married his 2nd wife , Dessie Mae Fannin around 1930. Dawrity spent nearly the entirety of his life in La Follette , TN. Dawrity Scalf died of a heart attack while visiting his brother , Lee Scalf , in Volusia County Florida.
