John Everhart, of Victoria township, Cass county, committed suicide Tuesday night by stabbing himself with a pocket knife. At the time of his death and for a number of years previous he had made his home at Nic Croisant's. For about six years he had been suffering with a tumorous growth on his neck, which of late had attained such proportions as to make breathing very difficult for him and for two weeks or more he had been unable to lie down, but slept in a rocking chair. Wednesday morning when Mr. Croisant entered the room occupied by Mr. Everhart he found him dead with a knife sticking in his breast in the region of his heart. His brother William who lives near was called and Justice of the Peace Rae was notified. He summoned a jury of three neighboring men, H. Kerkmann, George and William Holste, and held and inquest, the verdict being that the deceased came to death by his own hand. He was about forty-four years of age and a widower.
