Wilhelmina `Minnie` Engelhardt was the seventh and last child born to John 'Johann' and Marie (Schmidt) Engelhardt in Anklam (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), Germany. Minnie was 7 years old when she immigrated to the United States with her family. They traveled from Hamburg to New York aboard the ship `New Orleans' - arriving in July 1862. The family settled in Clayton County, Iowa.

Minnie married Louis Heckendorf about 1879 and they were parents of seven children:
