in the county, and, in partnership with George W.

years. He then purchased 160 acres of land, which
in 1882, he sold to his nephew and bought his
present tract of 138 acres, paying $75 per acre.

He was married in Richland County June 19, 1864,
to Sarah Balliet, daughter of David and Elizabeth (Williams) Balliet, a native of Richland County,

Note: Sarah was unable to have children of her

Obituary: DEATH OF JACOB SWARTZ

Jacob Swartz, who resided a short distance east
of town, died at his home on Thursday night of
last week. He had been ill of typhoid fever but a
short time. He was a man of strong constitution
and had been a hard worker. He was a native of Pennsylvania and was a little over fifty-seven
years of age. His wife, whose maiden name was
Balliett, died about two years ago. Deceased was
a man of rough ways and had faults, but let them
be forgotten. Rather let us remember his good
traits, for it is said of him that he had a big
heart for the poor and was ever ready to aid them
and that he was thoroughly honest. The funeral
took place last Saturday and his remains were
interred in the Emanuel Cemetery.
